Whoever thought that a day would come when I would actually blog from linux!!
Ubuntu is up, and functioning well. Guess why? Old man got me a DSL cable for my comp. All it takes to get ubuntu up and running is an internet connection and lots of patience while it uploads its gazillions of updates and codecs.
I can listen to MP3’s using amarok which is a rellay astounding software, and shame on windows platform for not having an equal. I can do everything I usually do in windows in it.
I mut say that it is a bit sluggish at times and the booting and shutting down times are definitely more than my XP’s.
Enough has been said comparing the two and pointing fingers from either camps have been very active, I do not wish to add to the noise so here is the schizo’s advice, saying what other’s don’t.
Barring virus protection and coolness factor, the majority of non professional and a large number of professional computer users, stand to gain nothing substantial from switching over to linux, Ubuntu in particular.
Go ahead prove me wrong, crucify me or beatify me. Whatever.

Congratulations. But I have to disagree with you on one point…
> professional computer users, stand to gain nothing substantial from switching over to Linux,
This may be true of ordinary users - but if you are a professional - especially if you are a programmer, you stand to gain a lot if you move over to linux. Linux is a much more ‘programmer-friendly’ system than Windows can ever hope to be.

well binny I stand corrected then, I should not have ventured into lands unknkown:)
I am talking about professions having to do with media, graphics, animation and the likes.
Why dont you write about how ubuntu is better for programmers, in a way normal people can understand?

Linux is better for programmers because it installs most things that are needed by programmers like -
Languages - Perl,PHP,Python,Ruby, Tcl - you name it, most distros have it installed by default.
Editors - Linux has many great editor - again, installed by default.
Tools - Software like FTP tools, Version control(SVN,CVS) etc are very important to programmers - again those are installed by default.
Another great plus point is that the source code of the OS is available - and there is no better way of learning a system than looking at the code of others. So it helps programmers to learn new things as well.
There are many other factors as well - like a powerful console, transparent working, community etc. but these are the main points why Linux is a better choice for programmers.
