Linux is NOT for the uninitiated. In fact it is not for anyone who is not already good at command line magic or has lots of energy and time to expend.
I agree it looks way cooler, and it is open source and as a philosophy it has no equal, but user friendly? NO WAY.
Read pages and pages of how to “sudo” this and “root/bin/mnt” that [blah blah blah] and you still don’t get anywhere because its not a GUI based OS its a command line based OS.
So try Linux, even the apparently user friendly ubuntu only if you have time and ou are more than just human[check the site out for understanding that]
My hopes of impressing the co computer owners and upping my cool factor have been doused by jet engine coolant.
Of course I a not going to abandon the project just because my initial 10 hours (straight) of effort were wasted, I just reformatted the comp, reinstalled XP, partitioned for installing Linux and formatted the drive as FAT, just in case.
ciao

Hmm,…, Six months of frustration was what I got when first switching to Linux. Ain’t no easy for the average user fed with the “Click-And-Go” food for long years. But I kept trying until I was able to do all my work with the penguin only. SuSE Linux is my favorite, but I know Ubuntu is quite popular. You can still “Click-And-GO” without having to use the command line that much. But the real knowledge gain, and power comes at a price son…
