Dusty beds and dirty hearts: The Lord Will Reprove.

Every medical student in India has to supervise and conduct at least ten normal deliveries all by him self during his training. This is a residential posting. Here’s something I wrote on the first day of my labour room residential’s.

I moved into my residential room today. It’s an exciting time; I live in the hospital and stay in the labour room. I have heard lots of stories from friends and seniors about this posting, some recounting joy, some disgust, some awe and some boredom.

I had asked the room to be cleaned since it is habited for just two months every year. When I reached the room it looked neat and clean the floor looked freshly swept and there were no cobwebs on the walls. There were many double decked steel beds with thick, inviting mattresses. Happy at the cleanliness I plonked down on to one of them. To my great horror a big, billowing cloud of dust enveloped me. It seemed as if it was angry at me for disturbing its centuries of rest. And so I coughed and sneezed and became breathless like any one with allergic bronchial asthma would on encountering dust.

Who ever had cleaned the room had done a respectable job of cleaning what was visible but had forgotten some of the most essential parts. The beds are the most difficult to clean yet clean beds are vital to the purpose of the room. Well, after the initial swearing at the incompetent system I dragged one mattress out of the room and hit it again and again with a rod to the clouds ceased to rise. Needless to say I sneezed and wheezed enough for a whole week in that half an hour.

My life is often like that, clean superficially but lots of filth if you look carefully. I am really glad that God doesn’t do cleaning the way the person who cleaned my room did. He does it thoroughly and slowly. It is often painful when he beats the dust out but nothing compares to the delight of purity.

1 Samuel 16:7: The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

Deuteronomy 30:6: The LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants to love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, so that you may live.

Job 5:17: Behold, how happy is the man whom God reproves, So do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.

Proverbs 3:12: For whom the LORD loves He reproves, Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights.
