Dysunctional Christian

May 29th, 2006 by Schizo · 15 Comments

I must be a dysfunctional Christian. I was taught that a normal functioning Christian leads life in victory, has abundant joy, can feel Gods presence at all times, will testify at every opportunity, will love to read the bible, that great things will be revealed to him regularly, that with Christ in the vessel he can smile at the storm, that the fruits of the spirit will be evident, that thanking god and worship will be easy and spontaneous, that every day will be energy packed and he will look forward to doing great things for god that he knows and acknowledges that all of mans suffering is mans own doing, that fighting daily struggles will be a piece of cake bec gods strength will abound, that if he prays god will make ways in the desert and wonderful things will happen, that you are either growing or dying, no static phase, no middle ground, that doing good things will not require any effort bec it will be such a joy, that he will stand out among the heathen and when compared to them he will be the most cheerful guy who everyone will come to advice for and every one will ask him why and how he is so different and better.

I don't think these apply to me. I am no model. People wont look at me and say “now thats a good Christian”, they don't stop swearing or smoking or cracking non-veg jokes when I am around. I think my humanity is got loudspeakers, very loud.

I feel an outcast at church. All around me I hear “I prayed and so and so was healed” “I fasted and I got a god job” “I was talking to so and so on the bus and showed him that worshiping idols is futile” “I have witnessed to so many people this week” “the lord is teaching me through this tough time”, “I have not missed a single week of worship service” “my co workers are asking me why I don't do such and such accepted thing like watching a movie” , etc….All i can manage is “huh? i guess i am ok”.

My attempt is to justify my stand, or the lack of it bec I am desperate I need to be assured that I am not “lost” that this is part of my spiritual journey so I resort to sarcasm, I don't understand the above group. I feel like and alien and I cannot accept that I have hammed it all.

Have come a long way though I still feel more or less a stranger in church. Perhaps that will change. Though I am not sure I want it to.

    All bloody christians are dysfunctional

  • 2 Matt L // May 30, 2006 at 10:26 pm

Have to correct your comment there “Jesus” ; ) All bloody people are disfunctional. Bible says so in black and white. Sure, it’s a bit depressing when we look around and all these “great” things people are doing for Christ. Of course the Bible says that all our good deeds are dirty rags (original translation actually refers to menepausal - yuck) before the Lord.

So what I am saying is don’t sweat it. Every step that my wife and I have taken towards Christ has been met with serious resistance, fear, and doubt. Every step closer we learned that all these “perfect people” have the same struggles as everyone else, that we shouldn’t be comparing (that’s Satan’s M.O.), and that yes, God has a very specific plan for each of us.

Of course he doesn’t reveal it to us all at once, but it sure is better than my half-baked plans : )

    be blessed, brother.

Actually, being dysfunctional is part of the process of being transformed, imagine Jesus on this earth, how “bloody dysfunctional” he must have seemed to the religious leaders. Well, thank god for that.:-)

Amen to the comment that “All bloody christians are dysfunctional”. I agree wholeheartedly with you gentelman!! A ‘bloody’ Christian is sure an anachronism. We can sure do without such people.

It takes a totally different kind of Christian to be functional. Fortunately, there are a lot of this kind in the Christian community. Only thing, they are scattered and one has to search. They, unfortunately, do not come in the form of polymer chains, but tend to be free radicals, where the word ‘radical’ is used here strictly to modify ‘free’ and free-radical is to be counted as a single word.

Er, a bit confusing? Keep reading my comments and you will be able to realize I do not jest.

I do see such free radicals around me, scattrered, my sorrow being that that does not seem to be the biblical model of the church, we are supposed to be long ploymer chain, supporting one another, bonded togather by the love of Christ.

    I long for Polymer chains.

I just read your post, coming across it by accident. (I love your photos posted Nov 22!!!)
The title caught my eye for this post. It bothers me that at church there are all these faces of “goodness”. The people that brag about how christ-like they are are usually the ones NOT doing the right thing outside of church…they are trying hard to convince everyone how good they are. True Christians are flawed, they know it and they don’t brag about the good things they do. We are all sinners, we are ALL flawed. The bible teaches the only one without sin that ever walked this earth is Jesus. ALl of us have been given a particular set of circumbstances, a past that we can use to help people. For instance….some people were abused - so help others that are in/were in that situation. Sober Alchoholics should help those who are struggling with that. People with mental illness should help others who suffer…..you get my drift. Most Christians have their own “cross to bear”….it’s how you live with that and use it to help others that shows that you are trying (with the grace of God) to live like Christ. Don’t ever have anyone tell you they are a perfect Christian —there is NO such thing!

    Hello Petunia

Thanks for your thoughtful comment. Indeed one of the things that hurt our church the most is this spiritual bragging. Do visit the blog again.

The problem that His people are having
is one of focus, influence and addictions and also
    faith.
Where people’s treasure is that is where
people’s hearts and focus will be. We are meant
to be focusing on Lord Jesus Christ
and the more we focus on the world,
on problems and people’s short comings as well
    as our own, the more
the problems will be amplified. However when we
give these problems to Him, He always has
    solutions.

Guess am just one of those people u would like
to complain about. Yes have an annointing, yes
can do whatever He gets us to do, and yes we do
witness and speak what He does and what we
see, it is not about bragging, it is about
sharing, and as we do, others are touched.
Yes we can be joyous, and yes we can be
    absolutely broken, shattered as well.

Everyday a word from Him comes and
everyday we do what is required
of us. He blows us away and we get the wow
at times and at other times are frustrated because of our
difficulties, because we are holding down
the fort until our brothers and sisters in Christ
can join us in doing Kingdom work, or we see
His people not living what they need to be
living and His ministery in the field is neglected.
We are tired because of what is required to do
and yet He recharges us, and we live the we rest in
Him and His works do follow us.
    We also live
with disabilities however it is capabilities
in His Kingdom work. My 14 year old has
    an amazing witness and
yes He falls short and as we both walk away from
what needs to, wow, He truly sets us free.

We live in Christ can do all things in Him who
strengthens us, that is we can do all things
He requires us to do. As our weakness is revealed and we
give it to Him, He sets us free and strengthens
that weakness and then it becomes a strength
    and gifting.

We also don’t go to any earth’s churches but
spend time with and in Him and we connect with
whom He is touching through us. WE fellowship
when we do ministery and that is what a lot
of the time we focus on and talk about, Him.
We have lived in the wilderness, and lived in the
desolate, lived in a seige, lived in our tent
collapsing and losing our home through fire
    witnessed Him in
the clouds and sky and He has shared His mysteries
    and visions etc… and throughout
we worship Him and also pray.

You see it is not us that does the doing, it is
Him that does the doing though us.
We just allow Him, do as He requires us and
wow the amazing happens. If we don’t do what we are meant to
when we are meant to, then He annoys us or compels us
until we do, do it. He makes it easy and we love
His Glory and seeing His Glory, and love
seeing the light of Him and seeing Him when we
close our eyes. We also know this is not
meant to be a rarety, but what His body of
Christ will be and it is about walking into
His maturity and it is His perfection we are meant
to be in, and His perfection through us.

It is not a one off moment, it is a continual
path, journey and process. Many small miracles
make up one huge miracle in the end.

Also those that do have annointing, live with
persecutions, difficulties, at times the absolute
abismal and evil and awful has happened, where
our Lord Jesus Christ comes and rescues
us and we overcome and different things surrenderr
    and change occurs.

What a lot of people are forgeting,is faith
is evidenced by works, not our works, the works
He gives us to do. Sometimes we need to go out
and do what He speaks to us, and then at times while
we are doing His works, He gives confirmation
that we did do the right thing. What the mistakes
some people are making is waiting for
confirmation first, and then wanting to go
out and do and speak, however at those times
the Lord does not move until His people move
    first and opportunities are missed.

It is His works, and His faith
just like it is His love, Grace, Truth, trust, bel
belief that sets us free and gives to us, it is
His Church and it is His people and we pray
it to Him and ask for His people to be who
they are meant to be in Him, so we can be the most
amazing body of Christ and He gets the Glory.

It may be time for you to walk away from where
you are and just fellowship with Him. IT sounds
    like from what I recognise,
He is preparing you, to come fellowship
with Him and prepare you for what you are to do
    in Him.
This is what happened to us, three years ago. You see three years ago I was not right
in Him and didn’t even know what a prayer
intercessor was, now wow, we deal with prophetic, impartations, clearing towns, apostleship,
    being one
His parents etc.. and helping Him raise up
His people and helping Him bring them into where they
are meant. At present we have the task
    of watering His kingdom seed,
and following the work of His Apostle Israel that He
is in the middle of sowing. Have we done this
before no, however He tells us what to do and
as we do, this then becomes another thing we
do and can then share it, or help Him raise up
others and guide them into doing His watering
    work.

    Yes we also love reading
his scriptures and have been known to spend hour
    s just being absorbed.

    We also
speak to many different people and help whoever
we are meant to etc…, we hug strangers etc, who then are no longer strangers and it is about service
to Him and His people and yet also about loving
Him and Him loving us and out of that flows the
amazing and that is what we reach out in.
    Times
we are so tired, it is Him that annoints people and
we witnessed one lady annointed at the front
door step of her home, while we were speaking
    to her.

we are the norm for the Body of Christ and what
His people will be and do.

To know who you are in Christ is to know
    who Christ is in You.

Please focus on John 14 and focus verse
John 14:20. The question is, is Christ in You and You
in Him? If not then this is the difference
and it is a matter of asking Him.

If you need help, go to Him and then if you
require assistance do not hesitate to email us.

If you hear Him call, face Him and spend time
with Him and listen to Him, no matter what it
    is just do it.
Yes we fall short, yes we suffer, yes we don’t have the help we need as we hold down the fort until
our brothers and sisters join us. Yes He moves
and we witness miracles and the amazing, as well
as the absolutely heartbreaking and shattering.
Yes we come in and deal with problems, and for a
time we struggle, until He moves and then wow.
We live in the impossible becoming the possible,
and yes we live with disabilities. Disabilities
in the world is God’s capabilities in His Kingdom
    work.

    Schizo,

I commend you for penning this blog. I think it’s important for Christians to see that others struggle with this kind of thing. It’s those like who you quoted that bring discouragement. I actually bloged on this a few days ago– http://faithwellgrounded.org/apologetics/spiritual-rheumatism

(I’m not trying to spam your blog, feel free to delete the link when you see it, as it’s primarily for your benefit.)

I think a lot of Christians are being sold a bill of goods. Often, your life will ghet harder when you commit, for we are actually soldiers behind enemy lines (Eph 6:12). God allows us to go through adversity for spiritual maturity.

It can often seem, as the bride of Christ, that we are carrying on in a long-distance relationship, but we have assurances that He is always near. And we have His comforter.

I pray blessings upon you, brother. And encouragement.

PS… I took your advice concerning the “about” page. Please do drop by often!

Hey. I just stumbled into your blog. Kudos! I like it a lot. According to your definition, I’m a dysfunctional Christian too. But I’ve known that for a long while now. Haha. I’m thinking of starting a club. We open every meeting with “Hi. My name is [name], and I’m a dysfunctional Christian.” The theme song is “I’m Not Cool” by Scott Krippayne. It goes, “I’m not cool, but that’s okay. My God loves me anyway.”

But on a more serious note, God does love the dysfunctional, outcast, down-laden, weird people.

    hey dear
nice to see that post and interesting strings to it …
i think an honest christian can say that yes that christian life is not everytime the life of a super hero… who can do and practice every bit of what Christ says with the ease as is usually talked in evanglical circles.. and many times forget about the ease of doin things .. many a times not doing at all…
to accept this fact within myself that i’m not yet perfect but would like to be one step better is what God expects of us.. and to bring that one step he bears and forbears with our weakness coldness indifference anger and many other shades of emotions as well as practical difficulties… giving us ever the time to be a bit more like Him…
when we look at what people brag and talk or boast or even some maybe genuinly able to do all it is important to realise one thing that i’m a unique person created by God with my own sets of abilities to follow God and with my own unique sets of faults… God takes interest and time in working in each of our lives even as he has taken interest in the salvation of each individual person of time past present and future.. he is wlling to spend time.. i need not follow or be like another fellow believer who is genuinly or hoaxin to be able to live out all What Christ says in and that too in dramatic sequences because God is wiling to spare time on me as n individual how long be it.. my concern as regards to my spiritual growth is primarily due to my association with my Master and not due to what my fellow brother or sister is doing or able to do… wheter they are able to do or pretend to do is between them and their Master… because God knows them as well and will work on them in His sovereign wisdom and time.. but as far as i’m concerned i need not think that i’m lost as long as i know that i am His child because i have chose to acknowledge him as my savior as a rsult of him revealing to me the need for doin that..
being able to do extraordinary things as you mentioned are not what God seeks most importantly.. he seeks worshipper who are true in their heart and willing to listen to Him irrespective of whether they become successful in obeying fully or partially..
but one thing to be understood very clearly is that God needs His people to be sensitive to Him.. neglect of that .. by placing other things in our list of priorities will slowly dampen our relationship with Him… and then sayin that i’m not being able to do what is extraordinary or even the ordinary is only an excuse with which we may be even able to convince many.. when the fault we know deep down in the bottom of our hearts is within us..which no one else may be able to see and they may sympathise with us or some may try to identify with us( of whom some be like what we are doing that is deceiving)..
we may then call ouselves with any fancy name and try to explain our inability with such catchy words… but the fact remains that we know and God knows that we dont want to be like what he wants us to be..
even in the matter of laying priorities it does not come in a single day.. we learn..we may actually be one who would till the time of our conversion would have never known what it means to give priority toHim.. and we need to ask God himself to slowly transform us towards being able to do it slowly….
in the closin.. when we fix our eyes on Him as our standard irrespective of what is happenin in the life of believers or unbelievers whether its ordinary or extraordinary.. it is then we will not have to feel that we are lost out or less better than anybody else in our christian life.. but we need to ask him to make us sensitive of him ..conciously that he may be able to work on us and in His sovereign time be able to make something of use of us… be it ordinary or extraordinary..
    thanks..
